In one of his most challenging cases, Sherlock Holmes, Basil Rathbone, is engaged by wealthy Roland Carstairs to protect the Star of Rhodesia, an enormous diamond pendant owned by his mother, Lady Margaret. Convinced an attempt to steal the Star will be made on a train journey from London to Edinburgh, Holmes boards the train with his faithful companion, Dr. Watson, Nigel Bruce. Despite their vigilance, the priceless jewel is stolen and young Roland is murdered to facilitate the theft. With a train full of suspects, one of whom kills without compunction, Holmes puts his own life at risk in a dangerous plan to flush out the villain.
