The quiet, unhurried existence of a small town, changes abruptly when the sheriff Sterling Hayden, learns of a special train bringing the President of the United States on a visit to an old friend. After liaising with the Secret Service and the State Police, he goes to check on a young widow living with her 10 year old son and her father-in-law in a house overlooking the station.
