Guiding a wagon train to California, wagon master Linc Murdoch, Charles Bronson, takes young Jamie McPheeters, Kurt Russell, into the town of Diablo, for supplies. Their excursion takes an unexpected turn when Linc encounters Maria, Susan Oliver, a woman he was deeply in love with, but thought he had killed during a shootout with her cruel fiancé, Rance Macklin, Jan Merlin. Linc escaped, Maria survived and Rance, who lost an arm, forced her to marry him. Linc and Maria are irresistibly drawn to each other, and Rance, embittered by his loss and loveless marriage, is hell-bent on revenge.
