Harry Graham Edmond O'Brien and his lovely wife Eve Joan Fontaine, have made their San Francisco business a financial success, but at a cost to their childless marriage. Loneliness leads Harry into a friendship with Phyllis Ida Lupino a free spirited young woman in Los Angeles who takes a shine to him. The friendship blossoms into more, and when Phyllis gets pregnant, Harry insists on marrying her. His two worlds begin to collide when Eve begs him to adopt a child, and the conscientious agent Edmund Gwenn investigates his personal life. This compelling drama was directed by Ida Lupino.
